Cost per 25g of protein: the fairer way to compare price

Price per tub rewards big packaging. Price per serving still depends on the brand’s chosen scoop. Cost per 25g of protein creates a more consistent comparison point.

Quick take

The useful answer in 30 seconds

  • Calculate total protein in the container before comparing price.
  • Use the final local price—including relevant shipping or taxes—for the most realistic result.
  • Treat 25g as a comparison unit, not a personal intake recommendation.

The formula

Multiply protein grams per serving by the number of servings to estimate total protein grams in the container. Then multiply the price by 25 and divide by that total.

For example, a $40 product with 24g of protein and 30 servings contains 720g of listed protein. Its estimated cost per 25g is $1.39 before shipping and tax.

Why price per serving is not enough

Brands define their own serving sizes. One serving might provide 18g of protein and another 27g, so comparing the two serving prices alone is not like-for-like.

Cost per 25g removes that particular difference. It still does not measure taste, ingredient preferences, digestibility or overall suitability, so use it after your essential filters.

Use the landed cost for international shopping

A cross-border list price may not be the amount you finally pay. Shipping thresholds, local tax, import charges, promotions and currency conversion can all affect the ranking.

For the most useful comparison, place shortlisted products in the retailer cart, select the correct destination and recalculate using the final payable amount. Do not combine prices converted on different dates.

  • Use the same destination country for every product.
  • Compare the same package and flavor shown in the nutrition panel.
  • Record whether a discount is recurring, member-only or temporary.
  • Recheck the result when the retailer changes price or serving count.

What this metric cannot tell you

A low cost per 25g does not prove higher quality or suitability. It does not measure taste, texture, ingredient sourcing, certification, allergen risk or whether you will enjoy using the product.

Think of value as a two-stage decision: first determine which products fit your requirements, then use a normalized price to compare the survivors.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why use 25g?

It is a convenient common unit for comparing products. It is not a recommendation for how much protein anyone should consume.

Should shipping be included?

Yes, when shipping changes the real cost of one option relative to another. Use the same pricing basis for every product.

Can I compare different currencies?

Convert them using the same exchange-rate source and time, or compare products in the local currency displayed at checkout.
